Sherwood Forest

The Sherwood Forest gallery is part of a wider project to document aspects of the Newark and Sherwood landscape. I have used a wide definition of Sherwood Forest which includes many of the wooded areas in the Newark and Sherwood district. Two hundred years ago the forest stretched from Worksop to Nottingham although much of the forest was heathland rather than the dense woodland often portrayed in the legend of Robin Hood. About 90% of heathland and woodlands have been lost over the years due to urbanisation, farming and plantations. There are some interesting maps showing the extent of the loss on The Sherwood Trust website together with a description of their good work.
